Text1
M: Hello! This is Tom Davis. I have an appointment with Mrs. Jones at nine o’clock this morning, but I’m afraid I’ll have to be about fifteen minutes late.
W: That’s all right, Mr. Davis. She doesn’t have another appointment scheduled until ten o’clock.
Text2
W: Don’t be nervous. They’ll simply measure your height and weight and then take your blood pressure.
M: That doesn’t sound too hard. I think I’m ready for it.
Tex3
W: Excuse me, Sir? How long can I keep this book?
M: Well, as long as three months. Please make sure you return it or renew it before it’s due.
Text4
W: Excuse me, sir. I’ve been waiting here for nearly 20 minutes just to pay my telephone bill.
M: I’m very sorry, but our computer system is not working at the moment.
Text5
W: Daddy, I have decided to give up science and go to business school.
M: Well, it is your choice, but I should warn you that not everyone with a business degree will be a successful manager.
Text 6
M: You don’t look well. Are you OK? Don’t tell me you are dieting again!
W: I’m just trying to lose weight the natural way.
M: The natural way? Remember those diets? In one diet, you only ate Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. In another, you drank 50 cups of water a day!
W: Those diets didn’t work. I’m on a new diet that will surely make me slim again!
M: All right. What’s the secret diet?
W: I’m not telling you. You’ll only make fun of it.
M: No, I won’t. Tell me.
W: All right. I only eat orange -colored foods. I’ve eaten lots of oranges and carrots.
M: What! Oranges? Carrots? You must have lost your mind!
Text 7:
W: Do you want to attend a drag show?
M: What is it?
W: It’s a special kind of performance where men dress up as women and women dress up as men, singing and dancing and telling jokes, just like your favorite Peking Opera, where many characters are played by the opposite sex.
M: But it sounds quite different. Why would anyone want to see it?
W: Maybe just for fun. Drag shows are very popular in America at the present time.
M: But it really doesn’t sound like my cup of tea.
W: Well, suit yourself. I’ll ask Mark if he wants to go.
Text 8
W: Excuse me. I am a tourist here and I am looking for something local and special here as gifts. Could you give me some suggestions?
M: Well, we have quite a few choices here: pottery, postcards with our local scenery, hand-made cotton hats and over there some food.
W: These hand-made hats look very special and beautiful! How much are they?
M: Forty-five dollars each or eighty dollars for the pair. The more you buy, the lower price I can offer.
W: OK, but I’ll buy one for myself right now and I prefer the red one.
M: OK. Here you are! Eh...We’ve got some great mangoes on sale. They are fresh and taste sweet. Perhaps you might want to try some.
W: Well, how much are they?
M: They’re on sale today for only $1each.
W: OK, 2 mangoes, please.
Text 9:
W: Hey, Tom, what are you doing here?
M: I came to put an advertisement in the newspaper. But what are you doing here, Susan?
W: I work here now.
M: Really? Why did you give up your teaching job in the English training center? Didn’t you get a high salary?
W: My husband changed his job, and it took him a long time to get to the new office, so we moved. But it was a long distance from where I worked, so I decided to find a new job.
M: Oh, I see.
W: What kind of advertisement do you want to put in the newspaper?
M: I want to sell my house as I’m moving.
W: Why are you moving?
M: My wife wants me to move to England. She doesn’t want to live in America.
W: In that case, it might be hard to see you again.
M: I guess so.
Text 10
Mr. Perkins stood at the bus stop and watched the cars go by. Many of the cars were new Beta400s, and most of them were yellow. Mr. Perkins always wore the same clothes as other men, ate the same food as other people, and did the same things after work and at the end of the week. Mr. Perkins did not like to be different.
The following week, Mr. Perkins bought a new, bright yellow Beta 400. He was satisfied with it, and drove to work in it the very next day. He was even more satisfied with his new car when he saw all the other Beta 400s in front, behind, and on both sides of him. Mr. Perkins parked his car in a big parking lot near his office, and worked the rest of the day.
But when he came back at five o’clock, there were so many bright yellow Beta 400s in the car-park that he did not know which his car was. He tried his key in some of the cars, but people passing by gave him a look he didn’t like. So he stopped. Poor Mr. Perkins had to wait nearly two hours until his car was the only one left in the parking lot.
