One day a woman saw a beggar sitting on the corner. The man was elderly, unshaven and ragged. Passers-by wanted nothing to do with him. The woman smiled. “Are you hungry?” she asked. The man slowly looked up. This was a woman clearly accustomed to the finer things in life. “No,” he answered sarcastically (讥讽地). “I’ve just come from dining with the president. Now go away.”

A policeman came up. “Is there any problem?” he asked.

“No problem,” the woman answered. “I’m just trying to get this man up.”

The officer scratched his head. “That’s old Jack. What do you want with him?”

“I’m going to get him something to eat and get him out of the cold.”

“This is a good deal for you, Jack,” the officer said. “Don’t blow it.”

The woman and the police officer got Jack into a cafeteria. The woman turned to the officer.

“Would you like a cup of coffee too?”

“Yes, ma’am. That would be very nice.”

The woman turned to Jack. “Do you remember me?”

Old Jack searched her face. “I think so. You do look familiar.”

“I am Penelope Eddy. In my younger days, you worked here,” she said. “I came through that door, cold and hungry. I was down to my last few cents. I came into this place to see if I could get something to eat.”

Jack’s face lit up with a smile. “Now I remember,” he said. “I was behind the serving counter.”

“You made me the biggest sandwich I had ever seen,” the woman said. “You paid for it out of your own money.

“I got a job that very afternoon. Eventually I started my own business – Eddy and Associates. It’s now a very successful bank.

“Please come with me to meet our company manager. I’m certain he’ll find something for you to do around the office.”

There were tears in the old man’s eyes. “How can I ever thank you?”

The woman answered: “It was meant to be.”

The woman turned to the policeman. “Thank you for all your help.”

“Thank you, Ms Eddy,” he said. “I saw a miracle today. And thank you for the coffee.”

She frowned. “I forgot to ask you whether you take sugar. That’s black.”

“Yes, I do,” the officer said. “But I don’t need it now. I’m sure this coffee you bought me is going to taste as sweet as sugar.”
