Text 1
W: What do you usually have for breakfast?
M: Fried cakes. But sometimes I have fried rice-noodles for a change. What about you?
W: I often have noodles for breakfast.
Text 2
W: I’ m going to the dentist’s, then the bank, and after that I have to prepare a presentation for the history seminar.
M: You’ll have a busy afternoon.
Text 3
M: Sandra, what’s the time by your watch? Mine is always fast. It’s already 3:00.
W: I’m afraid not. Yours is five minutes slow.
Text 4
M: Have you filled out your financial aid forms yet?
W: Don’t remind me about them! They are so complicated.
Text 5
M: You prefer meat to vegetables and fruit, don’t you?
W: Yeah. I think different kinds of meat taste better than vegetables, and they’re more nutritious.
M: I don’t quite agree with you. Meat is more delicious than vegetables, but it is not more nutritious than vegetables. Eating too much meat will do harm to your health.
Text 6
M: Have you ever been to a school reunion?
W: Uh, yeah. Why do you ask? Are you going to one?
M: I’ m organizing one for this summer. I have to make a reservation for a party room at a hotel. Do you know any good places?
W: Why don’t you try the Omni Hotel? My brother works there.
M: Could I ask you to check with him about the party rooms?
W: Sure. I can do that.
M: So what did you think about your school reunion? Was it fun?
W: I didn’t really enjoy mine. I’ m not very good at making small talk, but it was nice to see old friends.
Text 7
W: Does everyone wear a seat belt each time they drive or ride in a car?
M: Yes, I always have my seat belt on in my car.
W: The chances of being injured in a car accident this year are 1 in 65. I think that’s worth talking about.
M: Have you ever been involved in an auto accident?
W: Only once. My car went off the road on a rainy night. Fortunately I was wearing my seat belt..
M: Last December my brother died in an accident. He was in the back seat of his friend’s jeep when it rolled. He wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
W: Fastening your seat belt should be an automatic thing as soon as you get into your car. But too many people still refuse to wear a seat belt.
M: I wouldn’t think of going anywhere without wearing a seat belt. The doctor said it would have saved my brother.
Text 8
M: Now, listen, he is again hoping that we all achieve what we want and can display our skill to the fullest in our new jobs. I think the president’s speech encouraged me deeply, and doubled my confidence. The bitterness and tiredness we felt in the past have now given way to hope for the future.
W: I feel exactly the same way. I swore in my mind that I will do the best I can in the future so as not to fall short of the expectations of my parents, my teachers, and my country.
M: Well, the most exciting moment has yet to come. The next program is the delivery of diplomas and degree certificates. Let’s stand up and get ready to receive them.
W: OK. Listen. The song of graduation is being broadcasted over the sound system. Now, let’s go onto the stage one by one to receive our diplomas and degree certificates delivered by the leaders of the college.
Text 9
M: Good morning, Ms. Yang. Thank you for accepting my request for an interview. Could I ask you a few questions?
W: Sure. Go ahead.
M: Do you use English when you write songs?
W : You won’ t believe it, but actually we use English almost everywhere in our work and life. The songs we listen to and the movies we watch are mostly English ones. The instruments and software we use are all in English. We communicate with singers abroad in English. English is just too important.
M: Have you ever thought of doing some English songs?
W: Yes, but maybe not in China. For one thing, I love Chinese, and also I am afraid my English is not that good.
M: What subjects did you hate or love when you were in school?
W: I loved Chinese and physics. But I wasn’t very good at biology. I barely passed the exam.
M: What do you want to say to students who dream of being musicians and singers?
W: Studying should be the first thing to consider. The music industry is full of risk. Think twice before you step in.
M: Do you mean they should give up on this dream?
W: No, I just mean the job is full of challenges and it’s not easy to be a good musician or singer. But if you are really committed, that’s OK. The only way to fail is to give up. Just keep trying, sooner or later you will make your mark.
Text 10
On Wednesday morning at 11 o’ clock, I was walking down Main Street. I just parked my car in the parking lot near a bank. Suddenly I heard two shots! I thought they had come from the bank. I ran toward the bank. I saw a man coming out. He was short and fat with a big moustache. More importantly, he had a bag of money and a gun in his hand! Before I could do anything, he ran up the street and disappeared behind a bus. A few minutes later, many policemen rushed into the bank. I went into the bank, and reported what I saw just minutes ago. That afternoon I went to the movies. I saw the thief again at the foot of the stairs! I called the police from a telephone next to the restrooms. The police arrived in less than five minutes. They arrested the thief just as he was buying a chocolate bar from the candy machine! What an exciting day! And best of all, the bank gave me a $ 100 reward.
