(Text 1)
M: Mary says that she likes dancing.
W: But she doesn’t do it often, does she?
(Text 2)
M: I always feel like I’m out of breath.
W: I’m not surprised. You’d better try to lose some weight.
(Text 3)
W: Tom, I’m awfully sorry to hear your mother was seriously ill.
M: Don’t worry, Aunt Li. She is much better now.
(Text 4)
W: Tony, we must start off now, or we may be late.
M: OK. Sally, what’s the time by your watch?
W: Mine is always fast. It’s already 3:00.
M: Oh, I’m afraid that’s not so. Yours is five minutes slow.
(Text 5)
W: How far away do you live from our university, Mr. Smith?
M: It’s about a 15-minute drive. But during rush hour, it takes another 15 minutes.
W: Do you always drive to school?
M: Yes, because I don’t like being trapped in a bus or on a subway. And I’m too lazy to walk.
(Text 6)
W: Come in, Michael.
M: Thank you, doctor.
W: What seems to be the trouble?
M: I don’t feel well, doctor. My head aches. I always feel weak.
W: Well, let me see. Put this under your tongue.
M: All right.
W: You have a temperature now. I want to take a look at your throat. Open your mouth, please. Say ‘Ah’.
M: Ah! Ah! What’s wrong with me, doctor?
W: Well, you have a case of the flu. I’m going to give you some medicine for that.
M: How often should I take the medicine?
W: Three times a day, after each meal. Drink plenty of water. And get plenty of rest.
M: Thank you, doctor.
(Text 7)
M: Hello! I’d like to congratulate you on your wonderful performance.
W: Thank you very much.
M: You played the piano so beautifully. What are your plans for the future?
W: I’m going to give 100 more concerts. Fortunately, people want to come to hear me play.
M: Why do you have to work so hard?
W: I’m planning to start a school, so I’m trying to save as much money as possible.
M: What kind of school?
W: A music school for disabled children. I think they have the right to receive education like healthy children. At the moment there are very few such schools in my country, and it will cost a lot of money.
M: But I think a lot of people will support you, and I’m sure your wish will come true.
(Text 8)
M: So, Sandy, you are going home for the summer holidays?
W: I am. I’ve bought a train ticket for tomorrow afternoon and I can’t wait!
M: That sounds great.
W: What about you, Jeff? Going home, too?
M: I haven’t decided yet.
W: Haven’t decided? Oh, you’re never going to get a ticket, I think. I’m sure all the seats have been filled by now. It’s the holiday season, after all.
M: Well, it’s not such a big deal for me. My family only lives about a hundred and fifty miles from here. I usually drive or take the bus. It’s a short trip.
W: Well, I try to get home as much as possible. We’re a big family — there are six of us children — so it’s always a lot of fun.
M: Six kids?
W: Yes. And we’re all really close. You should see it — most of us are married, too, so it makes for a very crowded house over the holidays.
M: I can imagine. It sounds interesting! I hope you have a nice holiday!
(Text 9)
W: Excuse me, is this seat available?
M: Oh, of course. Let me help you with that big box.
W: That’s kind of you. Thanks.
M: Are you alone?
W: Yes. And you?
M: Me, too.
W: Our flight has been delayed two hours. My husband will be waiting anxiously at the airport, in London Airport.
M: Yes. You’d better make a phone call and tell him about the situation here.
W: Right. What are you here for?
M: I am here in Beijing at a two-week international conference on pollution.
W: How nice! Our environment is getting worse and worse with the development of industry.
M: That’s quite true. We should all work to protect our earth, which is the only place we have to live.
W: Yes. I was here for sightseeing. I like travelling, so every year I go to different countries to visit.
M: Really? What did you think of Beijing?
W: It’s really wonderful. In addition to Beijing, I also went to Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nanjing. Those trips were among some of the most enjoyable ones I’ve ever taken. China is really rich in history and tradition. Is this your first trip to China?
M: No, I come here every year, but always on business. I haven’t had a chance to visit those tourist attractions.
(Text 10)
Carole is a teenage girl. She worries that she is a bit too fat, or perhaps just too large. But she doesn’t know how she became that way. Carole has made up her mind to follow others’ example and plans to lose weight. Sometimes she feels so unhappy without knowing why. At these times, she often goes out to restaurants, bars and cafeterias for food. The things she likes to eat include bread, cookies, and chocolates. Although her stomach feels very full, she can’t stop eating because of the enjoyment she gets. She is a little worried about her behavior and thinks that she might have an unknown disease or a mental problem. With these questions, Carole went to see a doctor. The doctor didn’t think she wassick, but did suggest that she develop better self-control.
The doctor said that Carole needed to find something that could bring some fun into her life. Another way to give up the habit of eating too much would be to do something else instead, such as talking to someone on the phone, going out with friends or drinking extra tea. This could help Carole change her habit of eating too much and become healthy again.
