录音原文
Conversation 1
M: Why is our house so empty, Maria?
W: Mom and Dad took our son Mike to Walt-Mart to pick up his birthday present. Why are you late, Bill?
M: My bus was delayed because of a traffic accident. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
W: Oh, I see. Everyone should be back by 2:00 p.m. Would you help me with the decorations?
M: Sure. Do you think Mike will be very surprised?
W: Yeah, he is not expecting anything.

Conversation 2
M: Have you furnished your apartment?
W: Not yet. I didn’t know that furniture was so expensive.
M: I’ve found some used furniture that was very cheap.
W: That sounds good, but ... Maybe I should have chosen a fully furnished apartment.
M: That wouldn’t have been a good idea. Rent for one of those doesn’t include water and electricity.
W: Yeah, I thought about that.

Conversation 3
M: Have you done something to your hair?
W: Yes. Do you like it?
M: Hmm, well, it’s different.
W: Different? What do you mean by that? Do you like it or not?
M: I’m not sure. I think the dark brown looks nice, but I’m not sure about the red parts. It’s a new look for you.
W: That’s what I was going for, a new look — something a little fun and not traditional.
M: Well, then I’d say you were successful!

Conversation 4
W: Hi! Long time no see!
M: Yes. I don’t know if I told you or not, but I decided to start my own business.
W: Really? That’s great! What kind of business is it?
M: I’ve started a restaurant with two of my former colleagues.
W: How’s it going?
M: It started off a bit slow, but now, business is really picking up!
W: That is such great news. I’m really happy for you! Where is it located?
M: It’s here in New York. We are planning on opening up another place in Washington soon.
W: Well, good luck! I hope you can open one in my hometown of Beijing one day.

Conversation 5
W: Have you been playing any sports recently?
M: I used to play tennis a lot, but I don’t really have time for it anymore.
W: Why not? Are you too busy with your job?
M: Well, work does take up a fair amount of time, but that’s not really the issue. I’ve been taking care of my dad for the last several months. I moved back home to be with him.
W: That’s great of you to do that. Is he sick?
M: Not really. His health is pretty good for someone in their 70s. He does need to help with certain things, though, and I think he’s a bit lonely, too.
W: It must have been hard on him when your mom died.
M: Yeah, my mom did his laundry and cooked his meals for about forty years. My dad can barely make coffee! I’m actually trying to teach him some ways to be more independent.

Conversation 6
M: Hey, do you want some fresh juice?
W: Sure. Do you want to go out and get some?
M: No, I have a juicer here in my kitchen. I make my own juice every day. Usually, I use three small apples, one large carrot, and a small orange. I can also use pears, or even strawberries. Is there anything special that you’d like?
W: Oh, that all sounds great. I’ll just have whatever you’re having. When did you start drinking so much fresh juice?
M: About three months ago. I used to buy a lot of juice from the store, and I never really thought about it. But then I read an article about Steve Nash.
W: Who is that?
M: He is a famous basketball player. He’s almost 40 years old now, but he still plays in the NBA. And he talked about his diet. He never eats sugar, and he only eats fresh, raw food to stay healthy.
W: Ah, so I guess he drinks a lot of fresh juice, too.
M: Yeah.
W: Well, he must be onto something. 40 sounds old for a professional athlete, don’t you think?

Mini-talk
So, there I was in the bathroom, and a man was standing over me, yelling. I was really scared. I’d never seen him before, but he was pointing a gun at my head and telling me to “Do it! Do it!” There were all these animals there ... a black bird, a pig, and my pet dog ... I realized that this guy was telling me to kill all the animals, and that if I didn’t do it, he would kill me. I remember telling him that I couldn’t do it, but his face just got angrier, and I knew I had no choice. The bathtub was filled with water, and I remember listening to the noise as I did what he told me to do. Then I looked down and realized that my dog wasn’t breathing. Did I just do what I thought I did? Oh, no! Just then, he coughed up some water and looked up at me. He was alive! And the guy with the gun had left. Right then, I woke up. What a nightmare! I got out of bed to get a cup of water, and I saw my dog sleeping in his bed with a smile on his face. Phew!
