M: I didn’t see you at John’s party last weekend. (1)
W: I didn’t attend it. I went camping with my friends in a small town near New York.
M: Did you and Anna really meet at exactly five minutes to eight in front of the theater?
W: No. It was two minutes before eight, to be exact. (2)
M: Do you know James? He is in your class.
W: Certainty. In fact, he was the first person I got to know in my class. I still remember the look on his face when he showed up late on the first day of school. (3)
W: Hey, Dan . I hear you’re having an interview for the first time.
M: Yeah, next weekend.Fortunately, the boss loves to fish, so we will have something to talk about.(4)
M: Why does Bob look so tired?
W: He has been working day and night for the final exam. I told him many times to start studying earlier, but he wouldn’t listen. (5)
W: George,are you okay?
M:Yes, Why do you ask?
W: I had a strange dream about you last night.
M: Really? What happened in the dream?
W: In my dream, you told me you were going to stop working here.(6)(7)
M:But I love working here. Why would you say that?
W: I don’t know, but it was clear in my dream.
M:I think I know what your dream means.
W: Really? What?
M: I think it means you don’t like working here, and you are going to leave (7)
M: Good morning. You have reached the Monterey Bay Inn.
W: Good morning, sir. I ‘m calling to cancel a reservation. (8)
M:All right. What are the dates for that reservation?
W: They are….January 29 through February 1.
M: Ok. Would you like to book a room for another day? We are having a special deal in March: if you book a room for two days, you get the third day for free.(9)
W: No, sir, I ‘ve started a new job recently, so I won’t have any time off for at least six months.
M: I see. Well, I do hope you consider our hotel when you get some vacation time….So that will be two hundred and eighty dollars returned to you, would you like me to put it back on your visa?
W: Yes.Thank you, sir.
M:Hi, Katherine. How are you today?
W: I am great. How are you?
M: Very busy. I am jogging now, but later, I have to do a lot
W: what do you have to do?
M: Well, first of all, I have to go shopping . (11) We don’t have anything to eat at home.
M: Little jonny has a basketball game this afternoon. I am driving him to the game. (10)
W:Oh, How is his team doing?
M: They are doing very well. Next week, they are travelling to Toronto for the championship.
W: That’s amazing.
M: Well, Jonny likes playing basketball. I am happy he is enjoying it. What are you doing today?
W: I am not doing much. I am meeting some friends for lunch, but other than that, I don’t have much to do today. (12)
M:you are so lucky (12)
W: No, you are the lucky one. I’d love to have so many things to do. (12)
M: Cheers, Shirley. (13)
W: Cheers, Paul. What a lovely place for lunch (13) I must say I was pleased to hear from you, but from what you said on the phone, everything is a little sudden.
M: well, my father-in-law, who is also the managing director of J.R. Motives, has given me two weeks to prepare a report on the possibility of moving into the export market.
W:Of course I have.
W: Ok. Now the key thing in the whole operation is to get a good import agent, (14) and you say the bank will help?
M: I’m almost sure of it.
W:The early studies look very good, Paul. But if the product can’t sell, then there is little use in expanding the factory.
M:Yes, I realize that, Shirley. But we have a very good product. The chief designer has just completed a newly improved model.
W: I know your bikes have a very good reputation here, but you have to build up a reputation and market in Africa(15).
M: Yes, of course. But the immediate problem is that my father-in-law wants a deteailed report by next Monday. Two weeks isn’t enough to prepare a report, so I need your help. (16)
W:Ok, Paul, you have convinced me. (16) I must say I admire your determination.
I was born in New Jersey, but my family moved to New York city when I was five. We traded our three-bedroom,two-bathroom house with a yard for a small one-bedroom apartment. We lived in a neighbourhood called the Lower East side, and there were a lot of people with different cultural backgrounds there. This was my father’s idea. He wanted us to have a more cultured childhood. (17) we were closer to museums an d theaters and art galleries. My school had students from all over the world, and I learned how to take the subway every day. I also got to eat many different kinds of food, which was much better than in New Jersey. But there were some bad things. I didn’t like having to share a bedroom with my parents, and I don’t think they did, either .Also, the roads outside were always noisy,(18)and when it was hot, the garbage on the sidewalks made me want to throw up. But I want to say that my favorite part of living in the city was my neighbors. My neighborhood was mostly made up of families with kids my age, so it was easy to make friends.(19) Every evening after dinner , all kids would go to the park and play. And since everyone knew each other, it was really safe. I’m glad we moved to the city
