I set out to help clean up the beach after a violent storm a year ago. The sight I saw was heartbreaking. The broken houses seemed to be weeping quietly. I couldn't describe how I felt. But something special among the debris (废墟) turned my day around.

I joined a club to clean up the beach after the storm last November. As I removed the debris from the beach, I noticed an object with shiny buttons in the wet sand. It was a jacket, and I was excited since Halloween was coming and I thought I had found a great costume. After picking it up, I was able to see that the jacket was from West Point (西点军校), the United States Military Academy, and it had the name “deGavre” written inside. I realized the jacket might be important to someone. I decided to find the jacket's owner and return it.

I called the West Point Museum, considering that if the family couldn't be found, the jacket should go there. The museum connected me with Kim McDermott, Director of Communications for the Academy's Association of Graduates. Kim soon ensured that the jacket had belonged to Chester Braddock deGavre, who was a 1933 graduate and a war hero, but passed away in 1993.

I sent Kim a photo of the jacket and she posted it to the West Point Association of Graduates Facebook Page, asking if anyone could help us find the family. In less than two hours, someone had found and called the hero's wife, Teresa. Soon I started to receive personal messages from members of the deGavre family, their friends and others who were touched by the story and they found me on Facebook.

Finding Chester deGavre's jacket and connecting to his family with the help of Facebook have been so meaningful to me. I've formed a bond with amazing people I might have never met.

In his lifetime La Tour must have been one of the most admired painters, who was on close terms with courts in Lorraine and Paris and became the King’s Painter to Louis XIII in 1639. However, not many of his works survived. These can be divided into his early “day pieces”, and the later “night pieces”. Most of the paintings by La Tour we have at our disposal the art historians date after 1640. In these works La Tour is captivated with lightning effects which create sharp outlines. This fascination with light brought him great success in his day. However, he was completely forgotten after his death, only to be rediscovered in our own day. La Tour is an example of how artists can pass in and out of favor of the public.

Why is it hard for many of us to do things for ourselves before we do for others? In fact, being skilled at taking care of yourself may improve your ability to care for others; if you’re not fulfilled, you’re only able to see other people through your own needs. And studies suggest that not taking care of ourselves is unhealthy for those who depend on us. At the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, researchers found that greater level of caregiver stress were associated with increased respiratory(呼吸的) problems among the babies in their charge.

Many doctors believe that hobbies help make our lives more enjoyable. They believe that people who raise fish or collect records are too busy to spend their time worrying. Doctors also think that an active person, such as a football player, should have a restful hobby such as reading, while a person who sits at a desk all day should have a lively hobby such as tennis, golf or swimming. Most people in the United States agree with the doctors. It is difficult to find an American who does not have a favorite.
